Hallo aus Deutschland. Ja magu po russki shitat no ne pisad, so i prefere to write in english(sorry). I agree with the guy above me that Silver mostlikely gets alot of compensation from Epic. Obviously EpicStore would otherwise not get much traffic since people are animals of habit and would just stick with Steam if they have the option. But we all know that EpicStore provides ALOT more benefits for Dev/Publisher than Steam does. So its a given that in the future/soon other Devs/Publisher will exclusivly provide their games on Epic rather than Steam. But i think its only healthy for the industry as a whole since Gayben/Steam made in 2017 an estimate of 5Billion for practicly not much work/stealing. And after EpicStore gets more traffic/userbase lets say its split 30/70 E/S, they dont need to "atract" publishers with money to gain attention(no exclusive deals) they can focus on other benefits for us, for example reduced base price of a game. So its only natural that Steam will adapt in some way, be it monetarly or other "goodies" for both parties right? So in the long run anyone who shits on EpicStore kind of shits on his own head, Steam is Supremeruler and dosnt need to bow for us or Devs. The sad thing is that its Metro as the "scapegoat" and not another franchise. The game gets lot of hate on youtube for reason beyond any reasoning (imo stupid fking monkeys uncapable of thought and YTers like the one above/Boogie /Yongyea with audiences of worst ADHD cases). See, I don't get this "it should be healthy in the long run" attitude. Right NOW, I get real benefits from the Steam ecosystem. By generating free keys for developers, Steam encourages its own competition, as multiple digital storefronts all compete for ME, the consumer to give them money (instead of giving it directly to Valve). Resident Evil 2 Remake has been out for a week, (being a Steam top seller, btw), and you can already legally buy it for 1/3 off. Consumers benefit from this, but Capcom also benefits from this- more people buy the game and more people are likely to buy their other games. Everytime we've seen a publisher set up an "exclusive" storefront, they are usually crap when it comes to comparing features with Steam. Why? because they don't NEED to compete with steam. Having exclusives FORCES people to use their store- so there's no motivation for publishers like ActiBlizz, Ubi, Bethesda to make their stores/launchers any better (Origin is trying to actually compete with steam with its subscription model, but they're still pretty garbage). WHY should I suddenly believe that Epic will be any different? They launched their half-baked launcher missing a search button, ffs! Competition drives innovation, sure. But what Epic is doing is stifling competition, not encouraging it. It's trying to start an "arms race" with Steam, and the consumers aren't gonna benefit from it. Yes, I understand that the Epic store favours the developers- they are creating a seller's market. But Steam (and the ecosystem it perpetuates) favours the consumers- because it creates a buyer's market! So it's perfectly reasonable why people are against the ideas of Epic- they are, quite literally, anti-consumer by definition, because they favour developers (and publishers) at the expense of the consumers So i'll have to respectfully disagree with you. What Epic is trying to do is not good for the industry and if consumers can make this obvious (by voting with their wallets), that'd be a positive step for everyone in the long run. I do agree that it's tragic that Exodus got caught in the crossfire, though.

Iґm not 100% sure, but as it seems Steam is either way on an uphill battle.
I know that Steam is much more consumer focused with the pricing, but it wont last. Lets just assume Metro would sell 500k copies on Steam first week(no discounts) it would generate 30milion. (Steam takes 30% cut but it drops after 10mil mark to 25% so i do math with just 25%[favor to Steam]) Steam=7,5m Metro=22,5m. In Epic it would be E=3,6m Metro=26,4m. So the difference is 3,9m. I think its a huge amount of money noone would just throw away right? And in an ideal world they would invest the 3,9millions back to DLC or a new Game or whatever. In Steam world its hookers or something i dont know where the money goes(new Server-networks probably). So we know about the rage surrounding Metro right now, it still needs to Sell "only" 430k times and it would make more money than they would on Steam(They get most likely Bonus check from Epic anyway). And yes you said that Steam competes itself so prices drop super fast to 1/3 even(Middle-earth Shadow of... for e.x). It only favors "hyped up" games(preorders and hopefully no rage from community). With a huge press and whatever for example Fallout4 did super well on the first week, other games dont get so lucky and loss out alot. So Steam favors the big guys with big PR automatically. God Eater, Crackdown 3, Far Cry, Jump Force(?), and even Anthem get released on the same time window as Metro. Im not good with math but Metro would kill itself if it releases on Steam and misses the first fullpriced week(from experience we know singleplayer games drop hard asf), its basicly a given that the other Games get alot more coverage, anyone knows Metro is a quality game but the other ones apply more for the masses. So ofc they take the save way and go with Epic, even if the community rages. As far as i know the prices on EpicStore are more stable than Steams and even when you miss out the first week you can survive. And it shouldnt be a suprise but i hope you can see that when games compete for long term instead of the first "hype" week, they need MUCH better quality assurance than the newest titles(you know them). You know if the devs need to invest LESS in marketing and have more ressources available you get "real benefits", maybe more content, and less scummy tactics(In-Game-purchases, Season Pass, Lootboxes w/e). Even the prices will drop on Epic if Steam users still wont switch. Itґs just a matter of time when all decent publisher switch over to Epic (tons of benefits for them and its a given that Epic Store improves). So i hope i could get my point over, but i think anyone who crys about the situation with exclusive titles, may miss out on better products overall. And btw i cant be sure but, the situation with Metro seemed kind off sudden right? Maybe they were indecisive and waited to see how the Trailers would resonate with the community. And how much clicks bait articles other Youtuber and Blogs would generate. I dont want to praise Epicstore to much but having a more stable economy should help anyone, even pirates get better games and wont harm as much as they do now. |

And how much clicks bait articles other Youtuber and Blogs would generate. I dont want to praise Epicstore to much but having a more stable economy should help anyone, even pirates get better games and wont harm as much as they do now. you don't want to praise Epic... but that's exactly what you are doing. yes, I know there's a discoverabilty problem on steam. Indie devs complain about it, a lot. However, and this is especially true for single-player games, PC offers far more "long tail" sales. Day 1 sales matter far more on consoles than they do on PC, because unlike consoles, once a game is released on PC, it's always available and you never have to worry about losing backwards compatibility. Furthermore, Metro is a AAA game from an established publisher, not a first-time indie game. And Steam promoted it quite heavily for a while (which is another reason for rage against Deep Silver's move- it got a ton of free publicity and then bounced to a diff. store). Of the games you listed, only Jump Force and God Eater and Far Cry are gonna be available on Steam, and 2 of those are totally different genre to Metro. its only real competition is New Dawn, and even there the 2 games are going for totally different approaches to post-apoc, so I wouldn't really compare them. I don't understand why you are defending publishers over consumers. Frankly, I don't particularly care about publishers, because it's their job to make me want to buy their product, not vice versa. I'm not obligated to buy their games just because they spend so much time and money making them, if they don't deliver me the kind of service that I like. As for all the scummy crap like microtransactions and "games a service", well Jim Sterling put it best- "those publishers don't just want money. They want all the money. And frankly, I don't intend to give them a cent for it with games like Division 2, Destiny 2, Anthem, etc. I'd much rather give money to AA publishers like THQ Nordic or Focus Home, because they make games I like (and in case of THQ Nordic they even release them on GOG, my preferred platform). You seem to be under the impression that I should care about the publisher's financial well being. However, as far as I can see, most publishers are profit-driven corporations that will take as much ground as consumers give them. Latest issues surrounding lootboxes and the like just confirm this. So I don't intend to feel sorry for Deep Silver in this scenario. They aren't looking out for me. They are looking out for themselves. Also, once again... "it's a given that the Epic store improves..." why? What kind of proof do you have? I have seen precedents from other "exclusive stores" being consistently garbage. What makes you think Epic won't be like them?

I dont want to praise Epicstore to much but having a more stable economy should help anyone, even pirates get better games and wont harm as much as they do now. Valve right now doesn't do anything because they don't need to, they certainly don't regard egs as a competitor, just as any other marketplace is not a competitor. Epic uses shady tactics to get developers on their platform, essentially buying exclusivity and they openly stated that they will be primarily developer friendly (e.g. they announced opt-in reviews that developers/publishers will decide if they want to have reviews or not). You make some bold assumptions regarding buying potential of mostly child playerbase of egs and assume that most of those that would buy games of steam would do the same on egs. The main thing that many don't take in count is that there a clear animosity between consumers and publishers and it got the worst in last year. EA, Activition, Ubisoft and Zenimax did their best to alienate as much consumers as possible. EA went from cosmetic microtrasactions to full pay-to-win loot boxes in battlefront 2, all their games are essentially made with microtransaction as a main mean of making money. Then activision tried to show how to do that the right way - release the game without microtransactions then once reviews and game is praised enough add microtransactions to full extend (latest drama was around a simple reticle sold for 1$). Zenimax in a single game (fallout 76) completely destroyed bethesda reputation, gamers put up with their buggy games for decades because of modding community, but in this case they tried to make a very quick cash grab that to this day is a buggy mess and has issues that were fixed by modders in fallout 4 (also the prices in their atomic shop are beyond greedy). Then the is the part of "game journalists" (generally mainstream ones, not those on youtube) that would write dismissive and hateful articles on consumers whenever said consumers complain about something (one of the best example is diablo immortal announcement). There are a lot more of these small issues that accumulated day by day and right now consumers will act very swiftly against any kind of shady practice that goes against their best interests. The relationship between publishers and developers was pretty parasitic for a long time, especially for publishers like EA and Activision. Is clear that developers put a lot of effort into the game and in reality everyone was praising the trailers and all those that played the demo had mostly positive feedback. But this is used as an excuse for a very bad business decision made by DS, in a swift move they forced everyone to buy the game in one single place for the same price or more in other countries, moreover adding denuvo to the game to tax performance even further. Given what happened last year DS should have predicted how their decision will be met by the consumers (there were more than enough precedents), especially on western market, as the saying goes "they had one job".
